One of the many things I appreciate about your work is how you use different angles in your panels to enhance the various points of view. And btw…the strategically placed face palm never gets old. 😀
Panel 1: Of Mae and her um… friend, most affected by sexual energy transfer: Fiet. I sure wouldn’t’ve called that!
Panel 8: On the one hand, Mae should probably be more careful waving that staff around. On the other hand, her um… friend doesn’t seem to think anything of it, so maybe I’m worrying overmuch.
Panels 10-12: Bekha’s pleasure is all too clear, love the expressions in this comic 🙂 Also, ping! 😉
Panel 12: Interesting. We don’t see Mae having any trouble pronouncing Bekha’s name, including in the panel right before, and yet she abbreviates her name to “Bek”. That’s a pretty clear sign I’ve misunderstood how “Bekha” is to be pronounced. I thought the “kh” was like in Hebrew, or like “ch” in Gaelic or German, but apparently not. Is it two separate sounds, like “Bek-ha”? (I haven’t seen any linguistic tricks so far, so I assume it’s not a phonotactic assimilation or inflection for a non-English language involved, but I could be pleasantly surprised :))
Panels 12-14: With the offer of help, or with the reminder of Aray, Mae’s eyes return firmly to the prize. Coming hot on the heels of such an intense interaction with her um… friend, I think that’s a sign of who she’s proper smitten with <3
Personally I’ve been reading Bekha as the shortened form of Rebecca, and Bek or Beccs being the shortened familiar form of that. Can’t speak for the author, though.
You got it! Most of the “h”‘s are silent – just there for fun. 🙂 So, Bekha would be pronounced Beck-uh (I have no idea now to do that phonetic spelling stuff), and Bek is just Maeye being familiar and lazy.
Phonotactic assimilation is, for example, when a language allows the “kh” sound in the middle of a word but not at the end, and instead of dropping it or adding a “buffer”, the sound shifts toward the hypothetical sound-value nothing has, ending up at “k”.
If you were a language geek, then that could’ve been what happened here — but most people don’t want to play with different languages, they just use one and stick with it. That said, if you want to get into the various languages of Prentil, I’m sure I’m not the only one who’d be happy to lend a hand :J
I hate to be a wet blanket, but Bekha is the only person to offer help, and she was the first person to tell them about “the curse”, and, …welll. My suspicious mind notes that Bekha has hair as dark as Arayanna’s, and the other characteristics of the “vampire” also fit well, if you include a bit of makeup and clothes changes. So, if she is going around to the living victims with Maeve and Fiet, is it possible they will begin dying, before their information can be obtained? Not all poisons are in food, after all. Something as simple as a brazier turned so low it produces carbon monoxide can kill a person in a few hours of sleep.
Especially if there is no “vampire”, but instead a plot within the town over some condition “X”, then Bekha could well be the person the young girl victim saw, instead of Arayanna. This does not explain the Nacht und Nebel campaign itself, nor the persistence of the fog, but my suspicions are twitching. Usually, when a townsman is killed, it’s another townie that does it, because grudges build up over time, and we have yet to meet this authority figure that is so willing to kill someone from outside to “solve” the problem…and we know Arayanna could not have done this.
Fiet has enough charge to last her several days. I think if they did the lovely while Maeye was in contact with that staff there might be an explosion. 😀
Hmmmmmm! I just noticed something else. Last page, Maeye’s skin was quite clean. This page, in the 9th and 10th windows, the back of her has skin that is darkened, whether by shadow, or something more sinister, I cannot say.
Okay, it’s driving me nuts. Panel 8, Fiet is casting a shadow directly towards the candle. Panels 9 and 11 as well, the shadow is completely wrong for the light source. I know you’ve rendered it with a light source towards the reader, out of the panel, but it just looks wrong.
There are actually three light sources in the room that are casting shadows. The candle, the moon outside the windows on the right side of the bed, and the large fire in the fireplace at the end of the room that is not actually shown in any of the images. I will have to try to remember to always show light sources so the shadows are not confusing. Now that I think about it, I originally had plan to do these scenes with Maeye barefoot and start it all off with a panel or two of her taking off her boots and wiggling her toes by the fire. I honestly don’t know what happened to that idea. 🙂

Oh hey, that does explain the shadows these past pair of strips! Given my own tendency in renders to put a ring of lightballs overhead, sometimes to the point of lame LampshadeHanging, I spent a bit wondering over the shadows on Fiet last strip(Panel 5: easily explained. Panel 6: not so much.), then gave up. In the future I should look for light sources more… and you should probably either use more of them to avoid such spatialized shadows, or show them O:J
