Bk1: Ch11: Pg5
Arayanna: So I'm going to introduce you to two new things today.
Maeye: Besides the awesomeness of running hot water and indoor toilets?
Arayanna: Yes, besides those things.
1b.
Arayanna: The first is chicken noodle soup.
Arayanna: I am sure you have had chicken soup before, but there is something about Earth's chicken noodle soup that is ...
Arayanna: ...well...
Arayanna: ...magic.
2a.
2b.
2c.
Maeye: Epsca's Sweet Lips! This is amazing!
3a.
Arayanna: I thought you would like so.
3b.
Arayanna: The second thing I want to teach you about comes in two parts.
Arayanna: First, let me explain just a little about Earth technology.
Maeye: Is this more of the lectersy stuff?
Arayanna: Yes.
4a.
Arayanna: Earth humans have a curious kind of magic they call technology.
Arayanna: If you were to ask an Earthling about technology, they would say it is not magic, it is science, but I do not think
that it really makes any difference to us.
Maeye: Ok.
Arayanna: So, for part one of our two part revelation, let me introduce you to OZ.
4b.
Arayanna: OZ, I would like to introduce you to Maeye Festiva. Please grant her security access level 2.
5a.
OZ: Hello, Maeye. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.
OZ: Security access granted.
Maeye: What the bloody hell was that?
5b.
Arayanna: That is OZ. He is ...
Arayanna: Let's just say he is a bound spirit that helps us run the technology in the safe house. Does that make sense?
Maeye: Is he friendly?
OZ: Yes, Maeye, I am very friendly. How may I assist you today?
Arayanna: You can ask OZ anything and from anywhere in the house. He is here to help.
6a.
Arayanna: So for part two of our technology lesson we are going to ask OZ to play us a movie.
Maeye: What's that?
6b.
Arayanna: Human technology allows them to capture performances such as plays or concerts, and once these performances are captured
they can be replayed at any time on a device like a television or a tablet.
Maeye: Huh?
7a.
Arayanna: I think it will be easiest if I just show you.
Arayanna: OZ, please play The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring extended version in the master bedroom.
OZ: An excellent choice, Arayanna.
7b.
Maeye: Woah.
Arayanna: Yea...woah is right.
8a.
Maeye: This is incredible. Oh that's pretty music!
Arayanna: Yes love.
8b.
Arayanna: In a little while I'll make us some popcorn.
Maeye: What's popcorn?
Arayanna: Trust me, you're going to love it.
It’s been said that any technology, sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic.
Still, I’m surprised she didn’t start off with a porn film 😉
It’s known as Clarke’s Law. It was coined by Arthur C. Clarke.
Thanks for saving me the trouble of looking it up.
I thought it was Clarke but second guessed myself into thinking it might be Heinlein or Chesterton and couldn’t be bothered spending the hour I know I’d end up getting sidetracked into as soon as I did instead of just posting the plain quote.
Always found it to be an interesting subject. Calling technology magic is just my way of being intellectually lazy. I know the explanations are there, but just saying “it’s magic” is way easier. 😀
A porno would have been funny, but with Maeye feeling sick I think we’ll save that for later. 😀
Then, after the popcorn, we’ll introduce you a water-pik…
LOL
Any technology is magic to those who don´t understand it.
Right!
I kinda expected an empty soup bowl
Yea, sometimes DAZ fights me and I just give up. I wanted the soup to go down as the scene went on, but the mods were not there. Little lazy on my part. Apologies.
Same with glasses of liquids: they refuse to tilt the contents when someone is drinking
I would have started with The Princess Bride.
A most excellent choice!
She’d probably get off on Conan, the Ahnuld one, in more ways than one 🙂
In the future, the LotR trilogy will STILL be the best trilogy ever made =P
Glad we could get that one confirmed 😀
Well, this is a movie that Maeye is more likely to understand, as opposed to something like Star Wars
Also agreed!
Agreed!
maybe it’s just me, but OZ in my mind sounds like Glyph from Mass Effect series… 😀
Betterer than Oz from Buffy 😛
Not far off. I heard it more like Jarvis from the Marvel series.
Best part about learning how to make popcorn: she can introduce it to her friends when she gets home 🙂
Yes! Aray might bust out some microwave popcorn, but the recipe works across the board.
Describing OZ as a ‘bound spirit’ is probably easier than attempting to explain AI 🙂
Exactly. 😀
For Oz, I just had the computer voice from ‘The Starlost’ pop into my head.
A true classic 🙂

I’ve never seen that movie, but after watching that clip I am going to have to see if I can dig it up.
It was a Canadian SF TV show, starring Keir Dullea. Great concept. Horrible execution. It was a hot mess. Harlan Ellison (who wrote the screenplay for the pilot) and Ben Bova (the technical lead) have both written extensively on how thoroughly the producers and directors botched the whole show. My favorite story was about the director who couldn’t understand why the principals were looking for the “backup bridge.” He thought that would only make sense if they were trying to put the ship in reverse. Bova even wrote a novel spoofing the series: The Starcrossed. Wikipedia has more details.
I watched it when it came out and have never forgotten it.
It was so bad it was good 🙂
A true Canadian Classic, underbudgeted and badly directed 😉
Never mind that you can see the stage floor through the sand sometimes or the mic boom in the shots, and the sfx are straight out of early Dr Who.
The story is solid, an original concept (except for the parts that got changed), the acting is occasionally professional and the unintended funny bits are golden.
Well worth a watch, just as long as you don’t take the production values seriously, they did the best they could with what they had,
Yeah, I also watched the whole series. I was fourteen when it first aired. I later read the original screenplay, which won the screenwriters guild award. The title is “Phoenix without Ashes.” I think it’s still in publication. Read it if you can find it. It’s brilliant. It’s sad how much better the show could have been.
Harlan Ellison is my favorite grump. He is never happy.
Harlan was a brilliant writer, but he spent years fighting dishonest producers and half-wit directors, most of whom were happy to steal their writers’ hard work. Sadly, he began overcompensating. When James Cameron released The Terminator in 1984, Ellison threatened a lawsuit, claiming the idea was a rip off of his ideas, particularly two episodes he’d penned for The Outer Limits. To avoid a lawsuit, Cameron settled and added a credit for Ellison as inspiration for the movie. I love Ellison’s work, and I’ve read all of it. What he pulled with Cameron was crap. He later pulled the same stunt with J. Michael Straczynski over Babylon 5. Straczynski made the same kind of deal with Ellison, but when Straczynski later refused to accept advice from Ellison, Ellison pulled his famous Cordwainer Bird (the same thing he’d done to The Starlost), insisting the name Cordwainer Bird be listed in the credits as a source rather than his real name. Great writer. Too bad he became such an awful curmudgeon.
You might remember Kier Dullae as ‘Dave’ from 2001:A Space Odyssey 🙂
Slightly unnerved by how enthusiastically Maeye agreed in the invotive…
Maeye is going to say yes to anything that sounds sexy and fun – for Arayanna that is…
Heya friends! Working hard on the next page. Gotta be honest – this little storyline has been a lot harder to pull off than I anticipated. 😀 Next page is coming soon. Hopefully this weekend.
She likes the music ? wait until she gets to this part 🙂
Everyone loves it…see ?
