A great conclusion to the latest adventure! I particularly liked how they handled the dragon eggs. And they even picked up a new party member. I’m curious to see how Syril is going to deal with all of this…
So am I. A lot of the comic makes itself up as I go along. I am still not sure what I going to do with Sir Syril. He can’t be too comfortable right now.
Don’t get me wrong: I love happy endings. I never get tired of them. But, this one feels a bit surreal. I get why Maeye wants to save the nightmarish critters, but… nightmarish critters!
Aw, who am I kidding? This is a cool turn of events. But, if Korinnisa is going to be traveling with them, on the surface, won’t she need a really good disguise? I fear many humans would attack her on sight. That, or at least tell the authorities and get them into trouble.
And two questions:
(1) If Korinnisa is blind, why doesn’t Maeye offer to heal her eyes?
(2) Will they give Korinnisa a nickname? Four syllables is something of a mouthful, isn’t it?
Bah, nightmarish critters are just more work to take care of than dreamy critters π
Korin doesn’t look magical, as suchβ¦ she may actually provide a degree of cover for magic use in the group. “There’s no magic here, just foreign people and things. See?” Of course, the jig will be up as soon as Fiet or Endora or Dalleon goes glowing around, but still :J
(1) Maeye may, but aside from “convenience” stuff:
A) These people have healing magic of their own. Korin may have already been through the sacred-water treatment with the lorsa. It’s possible her wounds were much worse before thenβ¦
B) The issue may be more complex than that. If she was born blind, then the magic may consider that how she’s supposed to be.
C) Even if Korin was blinded by injury, the injury is presumably old enough to have already healed. The magic may heal towards the state she’s in now, all wounds sealed and smooth flesh instead of functional eyes. That is, after all, how innate healing works. The healing magic may just heal-without-scarring in fast forward.
(2) As a GM, I create names for NPCs by starting with the nickname; I actually see a similar pattern here :3 The name “Korinnisa” is on the low side of enough entropy to be a full name, and there’s an easy split at the gemination(the double consonant). Imagine if she had a Western-style full name of “Korin Nisa Skorrovna” :J There’s actually three plausible “riffing seeds” β “Kor” is rather butch, “Kori” is rather femmy, but “Korin” is just right, don’t you think?
Was thinking maybe she doesn’t have eyes to heal, and that healing would fix the socket but not restore the eye itself, but that doesn’t really seem likely
Darekun is pretty right on. Korinnisa’s nickname will be Korin. The use of magic is illegal on Prentil, but not necessarily “magical” creatures. There are other humanoids on Prentil that we would consider magical that are accepted on Prentil. There are yeti like beasts in the mountains, there are the Geoni – liquid rock people that live near Sternnar, and their Porro in Bentl. We will see what happens with Maeye healing Korin’s sight. I have not decided what I am going to do with that one just yet.
If Korin were to become a summoner, she might be able to summon a being to see for her, with a psychic link, when things get dicey.
Also, has Korin tried removing her veil since she came to the surface? What seems to be total blindness, in dark caves, could be partial vision, on the surface.
It could even be that she has perfectly normal surface dweller vision. Her vision could be an atavistic throwback to a time before her ancestors moved underground. She could’ve been considered completely blind because all she could see were fires and things close to them.
You’ve probably already dealt with her vision, in the story, but I’m still having fun speculating. π
Holy crap. I just realized something. In one of my all time favorite fantasy books, The Chronicles of Amber, the main character – Corwin – loses his eyes and we have to wait to see if he will ever get his sight back. Corwin – Korin. Totally an accident. Damn you, subconscious. Let me run things for a while, would ya???
Now I’m imagining events leading to Aray walking the Pattern, Maeye walking the Logrus, and it’s a miscommunication because they’d intended to both walk the same one :3
Well, enough people know of it that there’s an RPG, and not just a fan d20 implementation or something but its own dedicated diceless thing π
I got into it partly because of the mechanical distinctiveness of the RPG, and partly for stupid reasons, but I love the idea of Shadow as a multi-dimensional continuum of alternate universe-ness π
(Although some random things really stick with me. Two RPG groups now, with me GMing, have encountered ammo with jeweler’s rouge instead of gunpowder, entirely out of context :3 One group even arrived at the thermal lance connectionβ¦)
Uh, whups, those first bits didn’t come through. Lemme try againβ¦
D’awww <3
Typo in panel 7, in Maeye’s second speech bubble. “No we just need⦔ -> “Now we just need⦔.
Separately, it occurs to me that Feori may find new difficulties having a blind character in the main group. Our sense of relative position tends to be very visual, characters in a comic even more so, and thus a character who positions herself without vision can be subtly difficult to portray well. I’ve tried before, and failed, but he’s a better artist than I in a number of other ways, so O:J
I have thought about, and look forward to, the challenges of using a blind character in comic. This gives me a good excuse to watch Ray again. Anyone else have any movie recommendations that feature a well acted blind character? Jennifer 8?
It is indeed difficult to position a blind character in a comic amongst other characters who aren’t (fully) blind. The problem is how we, the readers, will interpret the way Feori use.
It does open another side-story, if that’s the right way to call it, about her handicap. What will Maeye of Aray want to do when she is with them for a couple of pages (days or so in their timeline) ? Will they feel sorry for her and have an urge or desire to help her get her vision back ? Who knows…
It depends on how she manages to navigate without physical sight, she may have ‘sonar’ (like a bat, or DareDevil), or she may be able to ‘see’ via magicks of some kind
In her home – which is, for the most part, a fully enclosed tunnel network – she can cope very well with her handicap. Living in marble and stone rooms and tunnels allows her to use her hearing to navigate. I think she is going to have a great deal of difficulty in the wide open spaces of the world above.
Hm. Reminds me of when I was little, and training myself in audio navigation. We had various sets of chairs in various rooms, and most required effort to hear the location and orientation of. But one set was a hard metal frame with plush seat and back pieces, and once I’d started training even a little bit, I could hear their location and even orientation while focusing on other things :J (Imagine seeing a room in various muddled greys, except these chairs are stark white frames with black seat/back pieces.)
This is going to be fun! I honestly have no idea what Aray and Maeye are going to do with her. Aray has run into enough trouble with her pale skin and pointy ears. I think Korin’s appearance alone could give them some difficulty. Yes, there are other magical creatures on Prentil, but Korin is unique and as we have seen, not everyone responds well to folks who are different.
Usually, in media, it’s to spare others from the sight of nasty wounds. See http://diggercomic.com/blog/2007/08/16/digger-182/ for example. RL, you also see cases where light hurts in addition to not doing anything useful.
True, but not all blindness is due to injury, but Feori explained it, would be nice if people on this world viewed things like that as challenges rather than obstacles
It is a ritual covering. The Loreshi celebrate handicaps as challenges to be overcome and therefore decorate the handicapped body parts for all to see.
Never mind, just went back and did a full archive reread and found that the green guy is one of Kraghen’s summonses. I’ve already forgotten his name, though… starts with a D?
Hey there friends. I am very sorry to say that I will be a day late on this next page. It will probably be late tomorrow night before I get this one out. All of the rendering is done, but I still have all of the post work, lettering, and page assembly left to do. Again, very sorry I am late! See you tomorrow!
Like they say, you can’t rush art.
It is better to take the time you need to finish the page just like you want it to be than doing it in 1-2-3 (sort of).
Leave it to Maeye to want to save te big bad monsters!
Yea. Silly girl. Gods only know how much trouble that big heart of hers is going to cause.
“Skorr says, My THANS…”… I know, i know… grammar nazi…
Couple of typos this time around! What is with this writer! π

Hey, even if you accept my split, you can call her by her middle name unless she minds π

D’awww “Now we just need⦔.
Dirty old woman that I am, upon reading Maeye saying she may not need that anymore, I wonder what her powering Fiet would be like now O_O
Interesting new developments, Korinnisa and the eggs have joined the party! I look forward to seeing their roadside banter :3

It’s not a movie per se, but this guy both is blind and vlogs: https://www.youtube.com/user/TommyEdisonXP
This vid is the first I found that involves him and a sighted person walking around together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoeUyyCpStA
Thank you!
You’re welcome!

Just like Earth
Sadly, yes.
Hmm, lizards with breasticles o_O
Was wondering why ‘Korin’ had her eyes covered, but, if she is truly blind, then why need there be for the covering? Mayhaps there is something else…

Please don’t let anything bad happen to Bekha’s friend! Don’t believe she will be able to run well in those heels π
I promise she will not be permanently injured. π
Unless she takes them off just like Bekha did, or run on the tip of her toes.
Boots like that? Take too long to take off, and most people don’t know how to run on tiptoes when barefooted, let alone in high heel boots
I can run in high heel boots. π
π
Did say most
But, high heel stiletto boots?
Stilettos would typically end up being more of a jog but if it was a run for my life situation, I would make running happen! π
And if you cut the boots sideways open ? Makes it easier to get out. Ok, it will ruin them too but what is important, life or fashion ?
Anyway, she’ll probably know how to run with those boots. She also dances when she wears them, I think.
She’ll run once those man-eating dragonettes start chasing her!
Where are they going to find a knife in a place like this? o_O
Sorry, I have trouble remembering everything that’s gone on… where did the little green man come from? Can’t imagine he’s from Mars…
Never mind, just went back and did a full archive reread and found that the green guy is one of Kraghen’s summonses. I’ve already forgotten his name, though… starts with a D?
That’s enough to pick Dalleon out of the Characters list π
Yes – Dalleon. One of these days I will get the cast list finished. One of these days…. So many projects, so few waking hours.
